A woman moves into her new home

Moving into a new home can be very exciting, but there are always a lot of tasks on your to-do list. For new homeowners, security should be at the forefront of some of those tasks. While you don’t need to invest a large amount of time or money, some implementations can go a long way to ensure a more secure home. If you’re a new homeowner, try these simple home security tips to keep your home safe and comfortable.

Change or Upgrade the Locks

New locks are a must when you move into a new home. While the previous owners should give you copies of any keys they have, there’s no knowing how many copies exist out in the world. Keeping your home secure from anyone who may have had prior access to the property is a must. Thankfully, changing the locks on your home is relatively inexpensive and is a simple project that new homeowners can easily DIY. While you are in the process of changing locks, consider installing a deadbolt. It can ensure added security on all exterior doors.

Avoid Enticing Thieves

Throughout your time at your home, there are a few key mistakes to avoid. Would-be thieves look out for a few signs that a home may be worth breaking into:

  1. Accumulating Mail
  2. Boxes for Expensive Items
  3. Lights continuously off

Accumulating newspapers or mail in the mailbox along with lights off at night can be a tale-tell sign that the homeowners are not home. If you happen to leave or are in the process of moving, be sure to put the lights on a timer and have the post office hold your mail until you are home again. When moving in initially and during holidays or birthdays, avoid disposing of expensive electronic boxes in public view. Putting your new TV box on the street for pickup is an advertisement to thieves that new high-value items are available in your home.

Outdoor Lighting

Make sure your yard is well-lit; dark areas with bushes and debris make easy spots for criminals to hide. Well-lit exteriors can discourage criminal activity; consider installing motion-sensor lights around entryways, walkways, and other vulnerable areas. Not only will your home be more secure, but additional lighting will also help with trip prevention when you are entering or exiting the building late at night.
